Modern-Day Dating Jargon

Well, times have drastically changed since lovers used to send love letters to each other to express their feelings.

In today’s world, WhatsApp and Instagram are devoted more time than the actual lover. Sharing memes, *ROFL-ing* and *Bae-ing* around has become the new way to express the love people have for one another.

Dating has become equivalent to rocket science, complications in relationships have reached their peak, and knowing about one’s relationship status is no cakewalk.

While hours are devoted to analyzing every single detail, conference calls are arranged, some modern-day trends have also paved their way to add to this heap of complication and misery. Today, we will be having a look at some of these trends that have taken over the old school romance:

GHOSTING

Well, this is one of the most common terms used by every potential date (or ex-dates) to express their misery after their potential partner goes MIA post a few dates. The partner stops replying, ignores calls, and chooses to disappear out of your life completely.

You may be dating for a few weeks or months, but it never gets official and one fine day they just vanish into the thin air, leaving you wondering about their whereabouts. Many have termed this act as cowardly, as it is an escape from actually breaking up and offering an explanation.

CUFFING

Don’t let your mind run wild here, this term has nothing to do with any of your fantasies. The months between September till late February are called the Cuffing Season.

This time, the desire to have a boyfriend/ girlfriend/ a bae reaches its peak. One tends to spend more time indoors, the days become shorter, the roads are empty and well, there is not much to do.

The desire to be cuffed up with someone, have someone to accompany you is at its high. The lack of Vitamin D makes people feel lonely and they start looking for potential partners and begin relationships.

GASLIGHTING

Have you ever been manipulated in a relationship for no fault of your own? Your partner makes a mistake, refuses to offer an explanation for it and instead, you are at the receiving end of all the blame?

This my friend, is a psychological manipulation technique that makes you doubt your behavior, judgment, and memory and your brain becomes clouded with doubts.

Those who have dealt with toxic relationships are not unknown to this and may have taken many many years of therapy or self-love to overcome this. Frequent lying and denial are also a part of gaslighting.

CAT FISHING

When a person creates a fictional character or a fake ID on a social media account, pretending to be someone who they are not, they are merely Catfishing.

In the world of Tinder and Bumble, it has become very easy to pretend to be someone else, using fake photos and bio, and luring someone to be attracted towards you or start dating you over the internet. It is not that hard to recognize when a person is catfishing. Their social media account will have a small number of friends, they will never video call you and avoid showing their face and at times they are too good to be true. So it is always good to research one’s background to protect your own feelings.

BENCHING

This is a common dating trend capable of breaking hearts. The person whom you like and are attracted to behaves like your boyfriend/girlfriend but refuses to give up their single status and commit to you. Such people are too afraid to commit or are clearly dating other people apart from you. Such people refuse to let go of you but also keep their other options open.

To avoid getting emotionally attached, the person being victimized should also see other people and keep their options open. The person who is benching you should also be asked to draw a line.

Hope this made your dating life a little simpler and now you know when to cut ties!!
