With the advent of smartphones and new gadgets, the traditional routine habit of reading has become obsolete. However, various news apps and tools like Kindle are trying to keep that healthy habit alive. It was rightly pointed out by George R.R. Martin that,

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. A man who never reads lives only one.”

Books undoubtedly are a man’s best friend but in order to explore that you must dive into the ocean of reading to witness the real joy. If you carefully analyse you will soon realise that the benefits of reading outshine the number of excuses you make before reading a book.

Let us ponder over some benefits of reading which will act as a motivation to transform yourself as a voracious reader.

Complete sense of mental wellbeing

Reading is one habit which completely promotes your mental health. Research has indicated that if you indulge in brainy activities like reading, writing or even playing chess, you would be 2.5 times less vulnerable to diseases like dementia or Alzheimer’s. Reading is just like a mental workout which increases the capacity of your brain

Reading - A great stress-buster

If you are stressed and continuously drive back to the same thought which is adding on to your stress, you probably need to pick up a book and cling to it. A book never disappoints you, it releases your toxic emotions and absorbs you in its calmness. Reading adds to a different perspective and slowly you will find yourself more empathetic.

Reading opens up new horizon of creativity

We all feel stuck or stagnated at some point or the other. This is the time when we need a fresh wave of creativity. This is usually brought by reading. Once you start reading, it broadens your thought pattern which helps you in breaking the glass ceiling. If ever you have come across any interviews of writers, eventually you will figure out that they are all great readers first.

Boosts the quality of your conversation and vocabulary

Do you have fear of missing out on intellectual conversations? The lack of confidence will soon dissolve once you start using facts with polished vocabulary. You will then turn out to be the cynosure of all the gatherings. Reading also adds to the sense of accomplishment and pride which can project in society. You might not take this seriously but with the steady habit, you will start noticing a gradual change.

Improves the quality of sleep

If you are sick of insomnia or too much screen time, switch to reading. It will not only help you to unwind your thoughts but also help you to have a relaxed sleep. Research has shown that if reading is the last thing before you sleep, there are chances that you would have an energised and a positive morning.

I know it might sound cliché but reading has multiple benefits and if you haven’t experienced it is time to set new reading goals.

Not only adults but if you read to your kids, you are getting them exposed to a brand-new world which is filled with fresh imagination and possibilities. The same life won’t be redundant or monotonous if you just step out of your comfort zone and start a new habit.

Once you cultivate this habit, join a lot of book clubs or post reviews about your choice of books. Trust me books are your best buddies and you can carry them whenever and wherever you want. They are ideal if you are travelling, getting bored or even when you are quarantined.

I would certainly echo what Walt Disney says -

“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates’ loot on Treasure Island and best of all, you can enjoy these riches every day of your life.”
